Award of Merit for Historic Preservation of WWII History
Award of Merit for Historic Preservation of WWII History
Jones Receives 5 North Carolina Statewide History Awards in 2005, Including Historian of the Year, and 2 Local Awards in 2006.
2006 - The American Association for State and Local History has chosen Wilbur Jones to receive a national Award of Merit for "individual achievement for your accomplishments in preserving the history of World War II." The award will be presented in September at the Association's annual conference in Phoenix, AZ.
2006 - For his most recent (2005) book, the "superbly researched" The Journey Continues: The World War II Home Front, in May Jones received the prestigious Clarendon Award of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. The annual bowl is given "to recognize the most significant contribution to 'the interpretation, appreciation and preservation of the history of the Lower Cape Fear through historical writing.'"
In April, Jones received the Senior Community Service Award of the Elderhaus, Inc., a Wilmington non-profit elderly day care center. "The community is indebted to you for sharing your time, talents and energy to make this a better place for all of us," Elderhaus stated.
2005 - The North Carolina Society of Historians selected him as the recipient of four such awards, including the elite designation as N. C. Historian of the Year (East) , presented to only 33 persons since 1941..
This distinct recognition is based on his books and newspaper articles about World War II Southeastern N. C., and his leadership as chairman of a successful volunteer historical preservation organization, the World War II Wilmington Home Front Heritage Coalition.
As Historian of the Year, Jones is recognized "for the many valuable contributions he has made toward the collection, preservation and perpetuation of North Carolina's rich history," the N. C. Society of Historians noted. His list of accomplishments is great; his dedication is inspiring; and his work on behalf of North Carolina history is exhausting."
The Coalition also received the Albert Ray Newsome statewide history organization award from the Federation of North Carolina Historical Societies.
Other awards from the N. C. Society of Historians include:
- Willie Parker Peace History Book Award for The Journey Continues: The World War II Home Front (2005), the sequel to his 2003 Peace Award-winning A Sentimental Journey: Memoirs of a Wartime Boomtown.
- Malcolm Fowler Society Award, given to the World War II Wilmington Home Front Heritage Coalition, a volunteer ad-hoc organization dedicated to identifying, preserving and interpreting the WWII legacy of Wilmington and Southeastern N. C. Jones helped found the Coalition in 2000 and has chaired it since.
- D. T. Smithwick Newspaper and Magazine Article Award, for his piece in the Wilmington Star-News on local veterans of the Normandy D-Day invasion for the 60th anniversary.

2003 - Jones received the NCSH's Smithwick award for a series of op-ed pieces on Wilmingtonians in WWII in the Star-News.
2000 - Jones received both the NCSH's President's Award and Fowler Award as chairman of Wartime Wilmington Commemoration, 1999, an 18-month series of 125 events saluting and honoring the area's role in the war effort and the people who served in uniform and on the home front. He also received the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society's Society Cup on behalf of the Commemoration.
